1/4-inch vs 5/16-inch Pressure Washer Hoses
A hose’s inside diameter is one part of the buying decision; match the machine’s flow needs, pressure rating, temperature and connection geometry.
What the specifications show
| 1/4-inch MorFlex | 40224: 25 ft, 3,300 PSI; 80391: 30 ft, 3,300 PSI |
|---|---|
| 5/16-inch MorFlex | 40225: 25 ft, 3,700 PSI; 40226: 50 ft, 3,700 PSI; 80392: 40 ft, 3,700 PSI |
How to choose
A larger bore can reduce flow restriction for a given flow and length, but it does not increase the washer’s rated pressure. Do not treat diameter alone as a compatibility guarantee.
Models to compare
¼-inch versus 5/16-inch: match the system, not a slogan
Use this decision framework to rule out unsuitable products before comparing price or availability. Unknown specifications should remain unknown until checked against a current manufacturer document.
Diameter is one input, not a guarantee
The nominal inside diameter affects the path available to water, but pressure loss depends on flow, hose length, material, fittings and operating conditions. Do not assume that a larger hose always improves cleaning performance.
Compare like with like
When possible compare hoses of similar length and construction, then verify the manufacturer’s published diameter and rated working pressure. A nominal size alone does not tell you the complete pressure-loss curve.
Match the machine and the accessories
Check the washer outlet, gun inlet, adapter sizes and the machine maker’s allowed hose dimensions. The hose must be rated for the operating pressure and temperature; a physically attachable hose may still be unsuitable.
Practical buying sequence
First establish both fitting interfaces. Next establish working PSI and temperature. Then choose the required reach and compare the listed internal diameter for the exact model. Leave any unverified dimension marked unknown.
| Variable | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Inside diameter | Part of the flow and pressure-loss picture |
| Length | Longer runs can change pressure losses and handling |
| Working-pressure rating | Must satisfy the equipment manufacturer’s requirement |
| Connector geometry | Determines whether a safe sealed connection is possible |
Evidence and maintenance
Before publishing a model-specific recommendation, store the manufacturer source URL, model identifier, exact attribute, and date checked. Recheck when the manufacturer changes a listing or when a visitor reports a mismatch. Do not substitute Amazon listing titles for manufacturer confirmation of technical compatibility.
These pages provide a research method and link to model-specific pages; they do not claim hands-on testing or guarantee compatibility with any particular pressure washer.
